Phoenix in the Oak wants everyone to be able to use this website, including people who use screen readers, keyboards instead of a mouse, magnification, or reduced-motion settings. Many of the people Tanesha works with are in pain, tired, or sensitive to motion, so this matters here more than most places.

What we aim for

We build to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2, level AA. That’s the standard most courts and regulators look to for websites.

What has been done

  • Every page has one main heading and a clear structure beneath it, and the page language is set to English.
  • Every meaningful image has a text description.
  • Text and background colours meet the WCAG contrast minimum.
  • The whole site works with a keyboard alone, and the item you’re on is always visibly outlined.
  • A “Skip to content” link is the first thing a keyboard user reaches on every page.
  • The site still works at 200% browser zoom and on a phone held either way.
  • Movement on the site is slow and small, and it switches off entirely for visitors whose device asks for reduced motion.
  • Sections that open and close are built with standard browser controls, so they work with screen readers and keyboards.
  • Forms have visible labels, and errors are explained in words.
  • Automated checks (axe-core) are run on every page before launch, and again whenever we change the site.

What we’re still working on

We’re not aware of any open issues right now. If you find one, it goes to the top of the list.
